How to Cook Sugar-Free Halloween Snacks for Elderly in Mesa, AZ

Young and old alike enjoy getting together to create a few different Halloween treats. Seniors and their Mesa home caregivers can make an afternoon or evening of it and create the following simple recipes to hand out on Halloween night.

Pretzel Spider Webs

For each web, position eight pretzel sticks in a wheel shape. Using white or brown chocolate, put a glob of the icing in the center and make concentric circles around the wheel spokes to create the web. Using contrasting frosting, fashion a miniature spider in the middle. Decorate each web with sprinkles.

Turtle Popcorn

Make 16 cups of popped popcorn and allow it to cool on a foil-lined baking sheet. Melt eight ounces of chocolate and an equal amount of caramels in a saucepan. Drizzle each over the popcorn and allow the mixture to cool. Cut the popcorn into individual serving squares.

Bloody S’Mores

Make traditional s’mores in the microwave. However, make an element of the macabre by adding a touch of red gel icing to each marshmallow. Top each with a graham cracker and enjoy the gooey red mess.

Graveyard Veggie Dip

On a platter, create the landscape using guacamole or spinach dip. Top the green soil with parsley for grass. Fashion a graveyard fence around the area using variable-shaped pretzels. In the cemetery, plant the leafed tops of celery stalks for trees. Crackers, cucumber and jicama slices make great tombstones. Serve additional veggies on the side.

Vampire Floats

In a pitcher, combine 32 ounces of red grape juice and one or two pints of raspberry sorbet. The delightful concoction will put a smile on your senior loved one’s face. You could also make this an adult beverage option by incorporating some raspberry liqueur and sweet champagne into the mix, if you’re hosting a party for the 21+ crowd.

Spider Bagel Pizzas

Halve bagels and top each with pizza sauce and mozzarella cheese. On each bagel, make a spider body from one half of a black or green olive. Create the legs from thin slices of the other half of the olive. Bake and enjoy with your senior loved one.
